He swore to protect Montana’s wild places.  But how do you uphold the law when the lawbreaker is your own blood?

Tyler Wilson always dreamed of wearing the badge of a Montana Game Warden.  Now that he has it, the job is tearing his world apart.  His undercover work in the Flathead Valley pits him against poachers, outlaws and the man who raised him to break every rule in the book.

As loyalty, justice, and family collide, Tyler learns that the real danger isn’t always in the wilderness.  Sometimes it’s waiting at home.

“Inspired by true events, Slow Water is a haunting story of courage, conflict, and the price of doing what's right when everything you love is on the line.”
-Karly Hanson

EXCERPTS FROM SLOW WATER

Chapter 1

Tyler looked out and saw that the Canada geese were just landing in the decoys, he fired three rounds as fast he could cycle his Remington 870 pump shotgun.

John Smithwick yelled, “Stop shooting you son-of-bitch, you’re killing my decoys” at the same time Tyler saw two of the goose decoys explode from his shotgun pellets hitting them.

Chapter 23

Tyler walked into the Emergency Room reception area and saw Holly sitting at the desk.  She immediately jumped up and came out through the doors and grabbed Tyler’s arms.

“Oh dear God, not again.  Are you okay?  You are covered in blood?”

For the first time, Tyler looked at his hands and clothes, which were covered in blood from the elk and from Joe.  He looked at Holly, smiled, and said, “I am fine, just been out working all day.  I just stopped by to check on Joe since I was one of the guys who helped him and Jake out on the hillside.”

Chapter 29

They arrived at the edge of the river near the goose decoys set up in the field.  John parked the truck, looked at Tyler, and said, “We have arrived fuck stick.”

They got out of the vehicle and walked towards the trees along the river.  John led him through the trees.  They broke out into the open on the edge of the river.  The bank was a straight wall about four to five feet high.  Tyler looked at the water, which was barely moving, brackish green, and sometimes swirling very slowly in places.  Tyler continued to stare at the water, he realized the river was the same color as John’s eyes when they started to swirl.  There were several sticks floating in the water, they weren’t even moving; they just sat motionless.  There were leaves floating on top of the water, even those weren’t moving.

Chapter 31

Jim was already out of the car, and he opened up the hatch on the back of his car.  Inside, Tyler could see nothing but trash and junk.  Jim walked up to Tyler and said, “I’m Jim, are you Tyler?”

Tyler replied, “Yes, sir, that is me.”  He reached out and shook Jim’s hand.  Tyler noticed immediately that Jim was shaking and very nervous.  He kept looking around, and he could not stand still.  He was constantly moving, whether walking back and forth in a six-foot area or just moving his body.

Tyler looked at Jim and said, “Well, what do you have for me to look at?”

Chapter 42

Tyler laid the note on the table and got his case reports out and started working on them.  He worked on his case reports until his personal phone rang.  He got up and answered it.  It was just breathing and background noise.

Tyler said, “I know you are there.  I can hear you breathing.  Please talk to me, I would really like to know who this is.”  The line went dead.  Tyler thought to himself, well I finally got to talk to the person on the other end, not that it made a difference.
