Inocencia grew up living in a walled compound in Mexicali, her family forced to work for a drug trafficking enterprise. Her childhood ended with rape and prostitution. She bore three children to three very different men, and supported her younger sister and three sons.

Innocencia initially received instruction in the Catholic Church, but when her youngest son was three years old she met a woman who brought her to an evangelical church, where she accepted the Lord and began her Christian path. Her husband died a slow painful death from alcoholism, and she endured more losses and tragedies but maintained her faith.
